This golfball is simpler than some designs, but it looks good when
rendered. It uses a bunch of spherical cutting tools (AND NOT
booleans) to achieve the dimples. The dimples were positioned by
using the polar vector tools in the file POLAR.RPL.
The basic design is 4 rings of dimples near the equator and two
hemispheres consisting of 5 triangular groups each. All 5
triangular groups share a commom dimple at the poles. I think most
of the dimples are about 11 degrees apart, although I shoved them
this way and that until it looked good. This model was based on a
real golfball called a "PINNACLE" that actually has this exact
dimple layout and count.
All of the golfballs I examined had similar layouts. The trick is
to find the equator and then decifer one of the hemispheres. Some
golfballs have dimples that vary in size, but this one has all
equal size dimples.
Hint:
It redraws much faster if you make the TOP and BOTTOM levels "WF
INVISIBLE" (wireframe invisible).
